Language functions to communicate meaning and meaning is dependent upon context; my work explores this idea. I am questioning where and how meaning is made, probing the problems of language and translating them into a visual and tactile experience for the viewer. I understand the mouth to be a physical container of language and the connection of language to the body. Speaking leaves no mark in space, it is heard and understood in the context it is spoken, and can only be re-read or re-spoken through another’s voice, another’s body. In an attempt to freeze the physicality of language I take casts of my mouth in the act of speech.
