My work explores the relationship of chance as a starting point for design and the direct interaction of the artist. Starting with a spill or stain I implement various control strategies to create pieces of jewelry. My control strategies involve holding the spilled hydro-stone a certain way , pushing a smooth piece of metal into the hydro-stone, rubbing the dried hydro-stone with various pigments and coming up with specific movements to make it dry irregularly. These strategies allow the process to be visible behind the design in a direct and obvious form. I use the body as site because the body is in direct contact with other people .This allows the pieces to become unavoidable and therefore confrontational.
The loose forms of the pieces stand out as 3-dimensional objects that when not worn on the body is confrontational in their interaction with the surfaces they encounter. They cast shadows that accentuate their overall form. The interaction between the shadow and the surface demonstrates that control is inherited in the objects form. This controlled overall form still hints at the chaotic beauty of chance. In this way these pieces represent the balance between control and chance.
